Northington Energy is focused on the development of two key renewable fuel sources – algae and soybeans.
To advance to the production of algae as an oil producing organism, Northington Energy recently acquired biotech research company Zenalgae™. Algae are the fastest growing plants in the world, and using them for biofuel production while reducing CO2 is key to Northington Energy’s growth.
Algae are scalable, and its volume of oil per acre is estimated to be 100 times greater than non-scalable forms. The potential of the organism as a fuel source is so great, corporations like Chevron, Honeywell and Boeing are following suit in starting their own algae business.
Meanwhile, Northington Energy's Agriculture Research and Development plan continues to focus on the development of East Tennessee soybeans for use at the new Morgan County, Tenn. facility. It is estimated that 12,000 acres of newly tilled and planted soybean crops will be added to the current inventory of approximately 10,000 acres for the 2009 growing season.
Our goal is to raise the acreage of available East Tennessee land being used for soybean growth to more than 40,000 acres in the next five years. This new sustained growth will enable local soybean growers to reap the benefits of a market driven pricing structure and secured purchasing programs.
The soybean crops will be processed at the new Northington Energy soybean oil extruding facility in Wartburg, the only soybean oil processing plant located in the state of Tennessee. Soybean meal, an additional benefit from the by-product of soybean oil production, will be made available to local East Tennessee farmers as a high protein livestock feed.
